Since 2006, the website FSH – The Gulmarg Snow Experts with information about our backcountry skiing packages is online, a little later also our corresponding FSH – Free Ski Himalaya facebook page was published, too. Despite the clear definition of the beginning and end dates of typical ski season on our website, I still receive a lot of inquiries about the snow conditions in Gulmarg, mostly from India but also from other countries.
With this blog information on the different periods with snow in Gulmarg is provided so that interested visitors can plan their trips accordingly. Two questions need, therefore, to be answered:
- In which period is the terrain in Gulmarg really snow covered, and
- Which is the best period for skiers to visit Gulmarg
When is Gulmarg covered in Snow?
We can say that normally the terrain above the gondola middle station (3’050 m) remains snow covered from mid-November till around the end of May. Read more
„The remote village Gulmarg lies at the Western end of the Himalayas and is located at 2’650 meters. It is a dream destination for skiers who are looking for the exceptional and who would like to ski at an altitude of 4’000 meters.”
In the winter 2006 I have discovered this backcountry skiing terrain on the 4’200 m high Mt. Apharwat in Kashmir and was part of a small group of international skiers who were the first to explore this exceptional ski area in the Himalayas. Since then I have returned to Gulmarg every winter and enjoyed many beautiful and extraordinary days there in the company of our guests and our guiding team.
Over the past years, I have shared my experiences and impressions of this remote ski area in my blogs. With this blog, I describe the situation today and share some pictures of the ski resort.
“People must again find pleasure in skiing and must, therefore, be offered new opportunities to enjoy this sport undisturbed and in a relaxed environment!”
Inspiring more people to ski and proposing new options to practice this sport undisturbed and in a relaxed environment is the task for all winter sports market players; tourist destinations, cable car operators, and outdoors companies who propose ski programs. With our backcountry skiing programs in the Himalaya and our powder skiing training courses in Gstaad, we are contributing to this initiative.
In this blog, I try to describe today’s ski market from my own perspective and to present how outdoor companies can enhance their programs to meet the expectations of tomorrow’s skiers.

Over the past 20 years, the “amateur” ski sports have undergone considerable changes. Despite that many ski resorts have continued to compete in the increase of cable car transport capacities and in the creation of countless groomed slopes, so called “skiing highways”. Read more
Free Ski Himalaya becomes FSH – The Gulmarg Snow Experts
In 2005 we launched our website Free Ski Himalaya (www.freeskihimalaya.com) to promote and market our ski programs in Gulmarg and our trekking expeditions all over the Himalaya. The name “Free Ski Himalaya” was chosen as it was closest to the description of the main activity we planned to run in this part of the world.
Since then Free Ski Himalaya has grown constantly and has become a professional and well established guiding company in Gulmarg with more than 150 guests from all over the world who participate every winter in the FSH powder ski programs. During the same time Gulmarg also became more known in the skiing community and has established itself as a preferred backcountry skiing resort on the ski destinations maps.
Whereas Gulmarg is today a known entity on the market Free Ski Himalaya has more or less remained the name of a website for Gulmarg ski and guiding services. The website is well positioned in search engines for a variety of keywords but the name “Free Ski Himalaya” has not turned into the brand name we feel is required for the long term market positioning of our activities.
